Self-Care and Present Moment Awareness

Have you been pushing yourself to the limit? Feel like there’s no room for anything else on your plate? Craving a moment of respite in the midst of juggling responsibilities, from shuttling kids to activities to handling daily chores?

After the closure of our gym in 2018, this became my reality. With my husband in career transition, I picked up extra shifts to cover expenses since he managed childcare. It worked well until the uncertainties of Covid disrupted routines. Despite challenges, my husband pursued a pilot’s license in 2020–2023, and by 2023, it became overwhelming. Some might say, “Tracy, you could have said no,” but sometimes, options are limited, and you grind for your family.

Balancing full-time work in emergency services, I added 40–60 hours of overtime monthly, essentially another part-time job. Financial struggles loomed, and moving in July added to the burden. Pouring everything into survival, I realized I lost my identity beyond work and family. Grocery shopping was my social life. It was a sad realization.

In a radical move, I decided to participate in a bikini competition in October 2023! Amid expenses and added responsibilities, it was something for me. A focus point, a routine amidst chaos, a chance to be social, and pursue a passion.

Securing third place marked a turning point. It signaled a need for change and transformation. I recognized the importance of doing things for myself, saying no when necessary, and finding my raw identity. I finally asked for help, sought therapy, and took a step back.

Embracing daily and weekly activities aligned with the six dimensions of health, I prioritized lacking areas. More walks, social outings, and exploring new fitness classes rejuvenated me. Starting my fitness and nutrition website, www.thisismeraw.com, and an educational website, www.thisismerawuniversity.com, felt like significant accomplishments.

Therapy, a renewed focus on health dimensions, and pursuing joyful activities marked a hard reset. With my husband securing a new pilot job, fresh starts are on the horizon.

My tips:

  1. Everyone should have a therapist.

  2. Trust your instincts when it’s time to seek help.

  3. Incorporate the six dimensions of health for improvement.

  4. Engage in activities that bring joy and foster present-moment awareness.

  5. Don’t delay pursuing personal goals. Take risks, learn, and grow.

  6. Cultivate a supportive network; it doesn’t need to be extensive.

Feel free to share your self-improvement journey in the comments. Excited to connect with you.

This is Me Raw, Yours Truly, Tracy
